Fortuna-sur-mer

France

“How long you think until they fuck?” Alexei asked in a low voice, eyeing where Liam and Oliver were bickering in that polite way English people had where they said one thing but meant something entirely different.

Sean snorted. “I am not betting on Liam’s sex life.”

“Why not? Team would.”

“The team is not here, and they aren’t going to be here.”

Alexei heaved out a sigh before slinging his arm over Sean’s shoulder to tug him closer. The attempted assassination by a mediocre sniper had sent the resort patrons into a panic and put its private security force on edge. At the behest of the UMG, they were playing up the angle that Alexei and Sean were targets for being known metahumans. That made searching the area discreetly practically impossible.

He and Liam hadn’t found much in their recon of the area, not even spare ammunition casings. The shooter had policed their brass, but the spot they’d holed up in was being thoroughly gone over for evidence by an MI6 agent. Alexei hoped they found something workable.

The MDF had agreed to recall Alexei and Sean to limited active duty for this mission only. They’d be working under Liam’s command, which he didn’t mind. Liam was an excellent team leader who Alexei trusted. Respecting Liam wouldn’t stop Alexei from making a bet.

“A month of coffee if they get together in two months,” Alexei said.

Sean slanted him a look that Alexei pretended not to see. “The coffee was a wedding present to both of us, Lyosha.”

“I not drink it for a month if you win.”

“As if that would happen. You’re a coffee addict.” Sean glanced over at Liam and Oliver, frowning thoughtfully. “Three months. Jamie can let us know Liam’s status.”

Alexei smirked. “Is good bet.”

“You know, I never gambled until I met you? I’d say you’re a bad influence, but I like you that way.”

Before Alexei could respond, Liam made his way over to them and claimed an armchair. It was angled so he could keep an eye on the windows overlooking the sea. Unlike the majority of the rooms available in the resort, the Palace Suite came with bulletproof plas-glass as an understated precaution for the paranoid wealthy guests who usually stayed there.

Due to the attack, the hub of operations had been moved into their building, though the agents working the mission were relegated to a different set of rooms on a lower level. Liam and Oliver would be staying with them in their suite to play up the new angle that Liam’s wedding gift to them was their honeymoon trip, and he’d been on-site to facilitate their arrival. The public story was already running its course on the news and gossip streams. Whether the people they were hunting believed it or not was doubtful.

“The owners of Fortuna-sur-mer are reluctant to initiate an island-wide security check on identities. The EAMSG is putting pressure on the French government to get the property owners to agree. No guarantee they’ll come around in a timely manner, but it won’t stop us from searching for Bennett,” Liam said.
